Why Business Should NOT Be Priority ONE If You Want To Succeed as an Entrepreneur
Entrepreneurship is often a struggle and it means going beyond one’s limits and pushing one’s boundaries. This is exactly what makes it similar to the physical exercise, and that's why exercising should be granted place in your list of priorities close to business. Bruce Lee, instructor, philosopher, film director and founder of his own style of martial art once said, ‘If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them’. It’s clear to most of us, but when ardent entrepreneurs have to choose between exercise and work they tend to put the latter forward. Here are some seemingly obvious yet crucial arguments that speak against doing so.
- As stated above, just like exercise, business is about reaching out your limits. But it’s easier to know your boundaries, to push them and to measure your progress when exercising. This makes you feel like a winner, drives your inner strength and further motivates you to achieve more than you think you’re capable of in all areas of life including business. Many entrepreneurs fall into the same trap when, trying to do more just by spending one or two additional hours in the office, they end up unfocused through distractions such as social networks and empty talks. No motivation or productivity come this way, so better dedicate these hours to exercising.
- Exercising regularly is a must. If you miss sports planned for today, you might as easily miss the tomorrow’s one and so forth until you stop exercising at all. This has happened to most of us at least once. The existential drama about it is that you won’t be able to catch up what you missed today. As for business, most of the meetings and corporate events that prevent you from exercising just one day can be rescheduled or even missed without any serious consequences. Modern technology offers many tools to handle information, but unfortunately it is hardly ever to be able to compensate what you missed by staying away from physical exercise this or that day.
- Exercising boosts your confidence. No matter if you manage to achieve your business goals of today, you will go to bed feeling more accomplished if you haven’t missed exercising. We all have these days when everything at work goes not as expected. In case you exercise regularly you always have a reason to be just in the least proud for yourself at the end of the day. Imagine what happens if you don’t: dissatisfaction with yourself and shattered self belief. These are often known as leading to insomnia, steady stress and even depression, things threatening your success.
- You want to be sure you have the energy to lead a growing company which is a pretty tough challenge by itself. Exercise gives you this energy. Sometimes people ditch exercising on stressful days deciding to sleep longer instead. But do the benefits of an additional hour shut-eye equal to those of exercising? It definitely won’t provide this positive aggression that you need to stay alert during the day and respond adequately to the hard challenges.
Persistence is a must for physical exercise. But keeping on track might be a real challenge.

Stated arguments are not meant to make regular exercising look like a burden. But they are to be remembered for the next time you have to decide between business and physical activity.
